New Hoagie--Gluten Free Too

Excerp from this week's From My Kitchen column in The Auburn Village:

“One of our recent success stories in the kitchen is the development of a gluten free hoagie, a real treasure since we have not enjoyed anything even close to a sandwich in about a year and a half. This prize is our, Open Faced Pizza Hoagie (recipe follows) that will serve as inspiration for good sandwiches to come. Finding the right gluten free bread product, in this case UDI’s Frozen Baguette, was the key. Creamy Asparagus Soup (recipe follows) rounds out a tasty lunch that goes well with a glass of Full Belly Red . . .

Rick's Valentine Orchid

The orchid that I gave Rick for Valentines Day is beginning to open with one blossom fully open. This beauty is THE center piece in our breakfast nook. Rick has me take a picture daily to record its progress.

Terrific Breakfast Dish with Tablescape

Herbed Scrambled Eggs with Potatoes & Onions (recipe in this week's edition of The Auburn Villager) would be the off-spring if marrying my Fluffy Scrambled Eggs (recipe published in early June 2007 edition of The Auburn Villager) to traditional hash brown potatoes. Flavored yogurt, precooked bacon slices and a Virgin Bloody Mary rounded out this dish.

. . . "The huge orchid I gave Rick for Valentines Day provided a great backdrop for my newest creation’s photo-op. The pastel colors in the orchid echo the colors of spring. To stage my picture I pulled out a few linens, including my mother’s multi-colored topper with butterflies. Pretty lime green placemats complemented the green in the topper. Placemats with an open white, yellow, blue and green plaid positioned at a 90-degree angle to the green placemats provided a rich, yet soothing color palette forming the basis for many tablescape color combinations from now until well past Easter." Valentine Tablescape Ideas

Valentine Tablescape Ideas

Be creative—set your table using mix & match items that you already own. Simply adding a red (or pink) heart-shaped doily off to one side of my black chargers created a festive touch for less than $2. Don’t miss the tiny little silver overlay heart on the sides of the antique compotes, a super way to carry out the theme of love.

Mix antique pieces with modern for an interesting effect, such as these black acrylic chargers.

Use bold colored linens to create a dramatic (& seductive) atmosphere. Pictured here are a white tablecloth with a black & white doily. Red napkins peaking out from under the white plate punctuates the color scheme.

Short, compact centerpieces focus your attention on the each other, the wine, foods, candles & music. A $4 bunch of mini-carnations plus a few snips from shrubs in my yard & place in an antique milk glass rose bowl created a one-of-a-kind centerpiece.
